These jam-filled fingerprints get an extra touch of texture thanks to the chopped walnuts. This recipe is from Martha Stewart Living, December 2003 and makes about 4 1/2 dozen. To make them, youll need basic sugar-cookie dough, bittersweet chocolate, chopped walnuts, and seedless raspberry jam. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and place the dough in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pot of boiling water, then drizzle it over the dough and mix on low speed until just combined. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls, coat them in chopped walnuts, and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Use your thumb to make an indentation in the center of each ball, then chill for 20 minutes. Bake the cookies in the top and bottom thirds of the oven, switching positions halfway through, until firm to the touch, 12 to 16 minutes. Remove from the oven and use the handle of a wooden spoon to redefine the indentation of each cookie; fill each with about 1/4 teaspoon of jam. Transfer the baking sheet to wire racks to cool completely. Store in airtight containers at room temperature for up to 5 days. For softer cookies, bake for 12 minutes; for crisper ones, bake for 16 minutes. If you like, melt extra chocolate for filling, then add to the cookie centers and top with jam. Heating the parchment paper makes it easier to fill the fingerprints.
