This recipe for a simple bread has been updated with the addition of rye flour, similar to the bread you would find on a traditional Irish table every day, served with butter and jam, smoked salmon or stew. This recipe appears in our cookbook, “A New Way to Bake” (Clarkson Potter). Source: Martha Stewart Living, March 2017. It takes 50 minutes to prepare and 15 minutes to make a 6-inch bread. The ingredients include 2 1/2 cups of whole wheat flour, 1 1/2 cups of rye flour, 1 1/4 teaspoons of baking soda, 1 1/2 teaspoons of kosher salt, and 2 cups of buttermilk. The dough is cut into six wedges and baked together to form an easy-to-pull-apart bread. If you prefer to slice the bread more easily, do not cut the dough – just make shallow diagonal lines with a sharp knife before baking.
