This sweet and sour sauce is great with steak, but can also be served with chicken, pork, or fish. The recipe is from Everyday Food, November 2004. The total time is 25 minutes, with 20 minutes of preparation. The ingredients include 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 1 steak slice (6-8 ounces), coarse salt and ground pepper, 1/2 small onion thinly sliced, 1 yellow bell pepper sliced lengthwise and thinly crosswise (ribs and seeds removed), 2 garlic cloves thinly sliced, 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme, 3 tablespoons of red wine, 2 tablespoons of tomato paste, and 1/3 cup of water. The directions involve heating the olive oil in a small pan, seasoning and cooking the steak, and making the sauce by adding onion, bell pepper, garlic, thyme, salt, pepper, red wine, tomato paste, and water. The sauce is then spooned over the steak. If you only want to make the sauce, you can skip step 1 and heat 2 tablespoons of oil before proceeding with steps 2-4. This sauce can also be used as a condiment for cold cuts and sandwiches.
