French pastries are known for their caramelized exterior and many flaky layers, and they only require two ingredients: puff pastry and sugar. This recipe yields about 28 pastries and is from Martha Bakes, episode 913. To make them, sprinkle sugar on a work surface and roll out the puff pastry to a 16 x 12 inch rectangle. Fold the long sides of the pastry to meet in the middle, sprinkle with sugar, then fold one short side to meet the opposite short side, sprinkle with sugar, and finally fold one long side in half to meet the opposite long side, sprinkle with sugar, and press firmly. Chill the pastry for at least 1 hour or overnight, then cut it into 3/4 inch thick slices, coat the sides in sugar, and bake at 450 degrees until golden and caramelized, about 10-12 minutes. Flip the pastries and bake for an additional 6 minutes until deep golden brown. Enjoy on the day of baking or store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a day.
