This recipe is perfect for building our Swedish gingerbread house. Sweet details like piped icicles, green branches, and a cinnamon stick woodpile give a simple holiday house realistic charm. A light dusting of powdered sugar mimics freshly fallen snow. To make the house, roll out the gingerbread dough on a lightly floured surface until about 1/8 inch thick. Chill until firm, about 1 hour. Cut out shapes using templates and transfer to parchment-lined baking sheets. Bake, rotating sheets halfway through, until just beginning to brown, about 15 minutes. Let cool completely. Make caramel syrup and assemble the house. Use royal icing to decorate the house with window outlines, door, and chimney edges, including top and bottom. Decorate the roof with a horizontal line of icing in a shell pattern, forming curves at even intervals; pipe another overlapping line to close the peaks of the shells above them in the middle. Add icicles around the edges. Dust the roof with powdered sugar. Enjoy your beautiful gingerbread house!
