Turmeric tonic is a constant in our test kitchen, used for treating everything from travel sickness to a bad day. Of all the turmeric drinks weve tried, this is the best. It hits all the notes; its refreshing, clear, and provides a significant energy boost. Additionally, it has only four ingredients: fresh turmeric root, fresh lemon juice, honey, and seltzer. Although my colleagues consistently ask me to make the tonic, the recipe is not mine. It belongs to chef Camille Becerra. When I first joined Martha Stewart Living, I was introduced to the tonic while preparing recipes. Turmeric as a functional food was becoming popular, and I was already using dried turmeric for its health benefits, but fresh root was not as well-known and was not easy to find. Eventually, I found some, bought it, and made turmeric tonic. I gave a glass to a colleague who had never felt right after travel sickness. The next day, she said it was the first time in months that she felt like herself. While I dont claim specific health benefits for this tonic, we all believe its powerful stuff. Now, with fresh turmeric root available at many local grocery stores, I often come to work and find a bag of roots on my test kitchen station – its not such a subtle hint to make tonic for the team. We all agree its worth it. • Invest in disposable or kitchen gloves to use when working with turmeric. Without gloves, you risk walking around all day explaining that you didnt get a bad spray tan. Honestly, its not the end of the world; after a few hand washes and maybe some gritty paste, you should be good to go. • If you want to save your manicure…use gloves! Stains stay on nail polish. • A question I get a lot is, “Do you peel the root?” No, I dont. I soak the roots in a bowl of lukewarm water and then remove any dirt from there. Easy.
